Entry of Appearance (also known as an Appearance Bond) is a written document by which an attorney or other legal representative agrees to appear in court on behalf of a client. The document is filed with the court and serves to inform the court that the attorney or legal representative will be handling the case. It also sets forth the terms of the attorney’s representation, including the fee agreement. There are two types of Entry of Appearance: voluntary and involuntary. A voluntary Entry of Appearance is filed when an attorney or other legal representative agrees to represent a party in a legal matter. An involuntary Entry of Appearance is filed when an attorney or other legal representative is appointed by the court to represent a party in a legal matter.
