Maintenance and cure are terms used to describe two distinct aspects of a legal obligation to provide for the medical needs of an injured maritime worker. Maintenance is a daily allowance for food, lodging, and other living expenses while the worker is recovering. Cure is the payment of all necessary medical expenses related to the injury, including hospitalization, doctor's visits, and drug costs. There are two types of maintenance and cure: full and partial. Full maintenance and cure is awarded when the worker's injury is sustained while actively employed on a vessel, while partial maintenance and cure is awarded when the worker's injury is not directly related to employment aboard a vessel.
