They may also engage in fishing activities or help transport passengers, cargo, and other goods. Seamen typically have a maritime certification, such as a Merchant Mariner's Document, as well as specialized training in navigation, firefighting, and other onboard tasks. There are several types of seamen, including Able Seamen (AB), Ordinary Seamen (OS), Quartermasters, Boatswains, and Deckhands.
