Washington START (Safety through Achieving Recognition Together) is a statewide program administered by the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries (L&I). The program is designed to help employers create safe and healthy workplaces for their employees, while also reducing workplace injuries and illnesses. Washington START helps employers develop and implement safety and health programs, promote employee involvement, and recognize their efforts to promote safety and health. The program is divided into two parts: the START Core and the START Select. The START Core is the primary program and is designed to provide employers with the resources and tools they need to develop and implement effective safety and health programs. It includes training materials, self-assessments, and resources to help employers identify and address safety and health issues in their workplace. The START Select program is an optional add-on to the START Core program and is designed to help employers receive recognition for their commitment to workplace safety. It includes an on-site assessment of the employer’s safety and health program and the opportunity to apply for a START Select Award if the employer meets the criteria. If the employer is awarded the START Select Award, they will be recognized publicly and receive an official START Select plaque.
