A Virginia Tax Certificate is a government document issued by the Virginia Department of Taxation that provides evidence of the payment of taxes owed to the state. There are two types of Virginia Tax Certificates: a Standard Certificate and a Business Tax Certificate. The Standard Certificate is issued for payment of taxes on real estate, personal property, and other tangible property. The Business Tax Certificate is issued for payment of taxes on intangible property such as stocks, bonds, and other investments. Both certificates include the taxpayer's name, address, and account number, the tax type and amount paid, and the date of payment.
