The New York NYS Firearms License Request for Public Records Exemption (.pdf) is a document that provides an exemption from the public records law for firearms license information and records. It is issued by the New York State Police and grants exemption from the provisions of the Freedom of Information Law and other statutes which allow for the disclosure of firearms license information and records. The exemption applies to applicants for a license to possess a firearm, to a registered firearms' owner, or to a person who is the subject of a firearms' investigation. There are two types of firearms license exemption requests: Type I, which applies to an applicant for a license to possess a firearm, and Type II, which applies to an owner or subject of a firearms' investigation. The exemption request must be submitted with a valid and complete application for a license to possess a firearm, and must be signed by the applicant, the licensee, or the subject of a firearms' investigation.
