Early interlock removal can dramatically reduce the number of months you drive with an ignition interlock. While many drivers face the prospect of driving with an interlock device for 8-24 months, you can have your device removed after only four months of use.

1. From Jan. 1, 2026, the law mandates that repeat offenders for driving under the influence and first DUI offenders whose violations resulted in injury install an ignition interlock device for a period ranging from 12 to 48 months.

If you fail that one, you must wait 15 minutes. After that, the lockout periods are 45 minutes and 24 hours.

(If the defendant does not get convicted of DUI but is found liable by the California Department of Motor Vehicles, the mandatory period for having an IID is usually 4 months).
