23 11 26 - Facility Liquefied-Petroleum Gas Piping.

The maximum design operating pressure for piping systems located inside buildings shall not exceed 5 pounds per square inch gauge (psig) (34 kPa gauge) except where one or more of the following conditions are met: The piping system is welded.

For welded piping, and for piping carrying gas at pressures in excess of 14 inches water column (3.5 kPa) pressure, the test pressure shall be not less than 60 psi (414 kPa) and shall be continued for a length of time satisfactory to the Authority Having Jurisdiction, but in no case for less than 30 minutes.

ASME B31. The test pressure shall not be less than 1.1 times the design pressure and shall not exceed the lower of 1.33 times the design pressure or the pressure that would produce a nominal pressure stress or longitudinal stress in excess of 90 % of the yield stress of any component at the test temperature.

ASME B31. 3 quotes a pneumatic test pressure of 110% of design pressure and a pressure relief device must be installed and set so that the test pressure will exceed only the lesser of 345 kPa (50 psi) or 10% of the test pressure.

All gas piping up with a line pressure up to 2 psi can be screwed or welded. All gas piping 5 psi or greater shall be welded.

A standard residential pressure test may include pumping the line with 20 psi and requiring that the line hold pressure for 4 hours with less than a 2 psi drop. When pressure testing a line, always wear personal protective equipment.
