A Washington Final Parentage Order is a court order that establishes the legal parent-child relationship between a child and one or both of the child's parents in the state of Washington. It can be issued for a variety of reasons, including divorce, death, adoption, and other situations in which the legal relationship between a child and one or both of the child's parents is in question. There are two types of Washington Final Parentage Orders: Voluntary Acknowledgement of Parentage (VAP) and Judgment of Parentage (TOP). A VAP is an agreement between the two parties that establishes the legal parent-child relationship without a court hearing. A TOP is a court order that is issued after a parentage hearing. Both types of orders provide legal recognition of the parent-child relationship and give the parent certain rights and responsibilities, such as the right to make decisions about the child's health care, education, and welfare, and the responsibility to financially support the child.
