Vermont Complaint for Relief from Abuse on behalf of a child is a legal document used to request protection from physical, mental, or emotional abuse. It must be filed in a Vermont court. The Complaint is available to any child who is not yet 18 years old, or who is still in high school, and who is alleging abuse from a parent, guardian, or another adult in a position of trust or authority. The Complaint must be filed within one year of the alleged abuse and is often sought when other attempts to stop the abuse have failed. There are two types of Complaints available: a temporary restraining order and a permanent restraining order. A temporary restraining order is designed to provide immediate protection from the abuser, while a permanent restraining order can provide long-term protection. Both orders can provide relief from physical, mental, or emotional abuse, and prohibit contact with the abuser and restrict the abuser's access to the child and the child's home.
