Tennessee GUARDIAN — Guardianship Generally is a program administered by the State of Tennessee Department of Human Services that provides legal guardianship services to vulnerable individuals, such as those with disabilities or mental illness. The program offers two types of guardianship: general guardianship and limited guardianship. General guardianship provides a court-appointed guardian with the authority to make decisions concerning the person’s medical care, living arrangements, education, and other matters. Limited guardianship is a less comprehensive form of guardianship that gives the guardian the authority to make decisions concerning the person’s medical care and living arrangements, but does not permit the guardian to make decisions concerning the person’s education or other matters. The program also provides educational resources and workshops for guardians and individuals who may need a guardian.
