The New Jersey Form of Order — Order of Protection is a type of restraining order issued by a court that requires one individual to refrain from certain activities or contact with another individual. This order can be issued when the court finds that one individual has committed an act of domestic violence against another individual or has threatened to commit such an act. There are three types of New Jersey Form of Order — Order of Protection: Final Restraining Order (For), Temporary Restraining Order (TO), and Civil Restraining Order (CRO). The For is a permanent order that remains in effect until modified or terminated by the court and prohibits the perpetrator from having contact with the victim and any witnesses. The TO is a temporary order issued for up to 10 days and is often used to provide immediate protection until a hearing can be held to determine whether a For should be issued. The CRO is issued by a municipal court and only applies to the municipality in which the order was issued. All three orders require the perpetrator to refrain from committing any further acts of domestic violence against the victim, and may also include provisions such as no contact orders, surrendering of firearms, and other restrictions.
