New Jersey Certain Alterations of Motor Vehicle Trademarks, ID#'s, Prohibited is a state law that prohibits the alteration, removal, or misrepresentation of motor vehicle trademarks, identification numbers, and any other information related to the vehicle. This law applies to all vehicles registered in New Jersey, and is enforced by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC). There are three primary types of prohibited alterations: changing the vehicle’s make, model, or year; altering the vehicle’s identification number; and making false representations about the vehicle’s history or condition. Violations of this law can result in fines, imprisonment, and/or license suspension. It is important for vehicle owners to understand the law and take steps to ensure that their vehicles are in compliance.
