Hawaii Wages and Hours of Employees on Public Works is the set of rules and regulations governing the wages and hours of employees working on public works projects in the state of Hawaii. The rules are set by the Hawaii Department of Labor and Industrial Relations in accordance with Hawaii statutes and regulations. The Department enforces the Hawaii prevailing wage law, which requires contractors and subcontractors on state and county construction projects to pay their employees no less than the prevailing wages as determined by the Department. The Department also enforces the Hawaii overtime law, which requires employers to pay time and a half to employees who work more than eight hours in a day or forty hours in a week. There are three types of Hawaii Wages and Hours of Employees on Public Works: 1. Prevailing Wages: The Hawaii Department of Labor and Industrial Relations sets the prevailing wages for each construction trade and occupation based on the wages paid to construction workers in the relevant area. 2. Overtime on State and County Construction Projects: Employers are required to pay their employees time and a half for any hours worked over eight in a day or forty in a week. 3. Employee Classification: Employees must be classified as either exempt or non-exempt from overtime pay, and must be paid accordingly. Exempt employees are generally those who are in a managerial or professional position, while non-exempt employees are generally those who are in a manual labor position.
