Washington Understanding Your Functional Capacity Evaluation (WIFE) is an assessment used to determine an individual’s ability to perform work-related physical activities. It is used by employers and healthcare providers to evaluate a person’s physical abilities, limitations, and potential for successful return to work. WIFE assessments consist of three components: physical testing, job simulation, and work simulation. Physical testing consists of a series of tests to measure strength, range of motion, and endurance. Job simulation tests involve performing activities that replicate the physical demands of the job. Work simulation tests involve performing activities that simulate the tasks and duties of a job. There are two types of WIFE: initial and follow-up. The initial assessment is used to determine an individual’s baseline physical abilities and limitations. The follow-up assessment is used to evaluate an individual’s progress and changes in physical abilities over time.
