Name Changes are filed in District Court, in the county where you reside. Generally a Petition for Name Change and an Order for Name Change must be completed. Please note that these forms are not available on the Washington State Courts web site.

In Washington State, if you are eighteen or older, you can choose and use any name you want, as long as you are not trying to defraud (cheat) someone. Example: It is not legal to change names to avoid paying creditors or child support.

Generally, a parent must file a Petition for Name Change on the child's behalf. The petition usually should be filed in the district court for the county where the minor lives. The petition is then sent to the judge for approval.

In some states you have to appear at a brief court hearing before a judge to have your name change approved. It can take several weeks or months to receive your certificate of name change, again depending on the state. You may have to pay an additional fee for a certified copy of the name change.

CONSENT OF BOTH LIVING BIRTH PARENTS IS REQUIRED: Unless one of the minor's birth parents is deceased (in which case a copy of the certificate of death is required), both birth parents must consent to changing the minor's name. You must present the minor's birth certificate to the clerk when filing for the name change.

Fees. Name change fees are $58.50 plus $203.50 auditor recording fee. As part of the filing fee you will be provide three certified copies of the name change order. Each additional copy is $5.

Pay the non-refundable fee of $308.50 and provide proof of Pierce County residency in person at the Pierce County District Court Clerk's Office within 72 hours of completing the online interview process to receive a hearing date and copy of the Petition for Change of Name.
