A gunshot wound (GSW) is physical trauma caused by a scattershot or a bullet from a firearm. Damage may include bleeding, broken bones, organ damage, infection of the wound, or loss of the ability to move part of the body.

Treatment of a gunshot wound to the abdomen may include bandaging, direct pressure and use of an occlusive dressing. The location of the wound and patient's overall condition will influence specific treatment, including fluid administration.

Wash the wound with clean water 2 times a day. Don't use hydrogen peroxide or alcohol, which can slow healing. You may cover the wound with a thin layer of petroleum jelly, such as Vaseline, and a nonstick bandage. Apply more petroleum jelly and replace the bandage as needed.

For gunshot wounds to the chest, seal the wound with some type of plastic to keep air from being sucked into the wound. 2feff This helps prevent the development of a collapsed lung. If the patient begins complaining of worsening shortness of breath after sealing the wound, remove the seal.

Daily cleaning of the wound. Packing the wound with gauze. Applying a dressing. Applying a negative-pressure wound therapy device. Applying antibiotic ointment. Caring for additional wounds related to surgery to remove bullets or restore function to bones or other tissues.

Check the whole body to identify entry and exit wounds. Stop the bleeding by applying firm pressure directly to the wound. Chech heart rate and breathing. Elevate the wound above the heart to slow bleeding (unless the shot is to the stomach or chest).

The Medical Injury Compensation Reform Act states that if a medical professional or another health care worker caused your injuries in California, you can only obtain up to $250,000 in total noneconomic damages from the defendant.

In any gunshot would, get expert medical treatment as soon as possible. If you see a bullet exit wound, apply direct pressure to that wound, too.
