18 U.S.C. Sec. 981(a)(2) defines "proceeds" as the "amount of money acquired through or as a result of an unlawful activity or violation of a state or federal law." This definition encompasses several types of "proceeds", including the profits, gains, and other benefits derived from the sale of property derived from an unlawful activity, as well as the proceeds of a crime, such as robbery, embezzlement, fraud, or drug trafficking. Additionally, this definition also includes any monies received or exchanged as a result of a criminal act or violation of a state or federal law.
