Sec. 1030(E)(6) Definition of “Exceeds Authorized Access” refers to the act of accessing a computer, computer system, or network without authorization, or in excess of the scope of one’s authorization. This definition is divided into two parts: 1. Unauthorized Access: This type of access occurs when an individual has not been granted permission to use a computer, computer system, or network. 2. Exceeds Authorized Access: This type of access occurs when an individual is granted permission to use a computer, computer system, or network but has exceeded the scope of their authorization. For example, an individual may have been granted access to view certain files but has accessed other files without permission.
