Texas Order for a Pre-sentence Investigation and Report (PSI) is an order to the probation department of a jurisdiction to conduct a thorough investigation into the background, character, and circumstances of a defendant prior to sentencing. It is a critical part of the sentencing process for criminal cases. The purpose of the PSI is to provide the court with information and a written report to aid in the determination of the appropriate sentence for the defendant. The report will include information on the defendant’s criminal history, social history, education, employment, family and financial situation, mental health, and any other factors that might be relevant to the sentencing process. There are three types of Texas Order for a Pre-sentence Investigation and Report: 1. Standard PSI 2. Expedited PSI 3. Enhanced PSI Standard PSI is the most common type of PSI and is used when a court has ordered a sentencing hearing for a defendant. Expedited PSI is used when the court has ordered an expedited sentencing hearing. Enhanced PSI is used when the court has requested additional information about the defendant that is not typically included in a standard PSI.
