Circuit Courts are courts of general jurisdiction in Tennessee. Circuit court judges hear civil and criminal cases and appeals of decisions from Juvenile, Municipal, and General Sessions Courts. The jurisdiction of circuit courts often overlaps that of the chancery courts.

It is a court of limited and special jurisdiction that hears civil, criminal, traffic, and metropolitan ordinance violations. The civil jurisdiction includes civil lawsuits up to $15,000.00 except for Actions to Recover Personal Property where possession and alternative money judgments up to $25,000.00 may be awarded.
