The New York Practitioners Report of Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) is a comprehensive evaluation used to assess an individual’s physical and mental abilities. It is typically used to measure the ability of an individual to safely perform physical job tasks required for their current or desired job. The FCE consists of a battery of tests that measure strength, endurance, range of motion, coordination, and other physical and mental abilities. The evaluation is typically administered by a certified health care provider, such as a physician, physical therapist, occupational therapist, or certified FCE specialist. There are two primary types of New York Practitioners Report of Functional Capacity Evaluation: the Pre-Employment and Return-to-Work Reports. The Pre-Employment Report is used to assess an individual’s capabilities prior to beginning a new job. The Return-to-Work Report is used to assess an individual’s abilities following an injury or illness that has caused the individual to be unable to perform their regular job duties. The results from the FCE can provide employers and health care providers with valuable information regarding an individual’s ability to safely return to work.
