Let's do an example to see what the numbers say. To keep things simple, let's say that a federal employee has 160 hours of unused sick leave and 160 hours of unused annual leave and needs to take a month (4 weeks) off and will retire immediately after. This would require using (440) 160 hours of leave.
On the negative side, and to the surprise of many, unused sick leave can't be used to make you eligible to retire. It can only be added after you have met the age and service requirements to do that.
Eligibility. You are eligible to retire at any age after completing 20 years of creditable service. You may also receive a service retirement benefit at age 62, even if you do not have 20 years of creditable service.
You may retire with unreduced service retirement benefits after: you reach age 65 and complete five years of creditable service, or. you reach age 60 and complete 25 years of creditable service, or. you complete 30 years of creditable service, at any age.
A refund of your contributions (along with four percent interest compounded annually) is available to you 60 days after your effective date of resignation or termination. The 60-day waiting period is required by the General Statutes of North Carolina.
Members should fill out and submit Form 5 (Withdrawing Your Retirement Service Credit and Contributions) to the Retirement Systems Division. After your Form 5 is processed, you will receive a paper check by mail unless you request that your contributions be rolled into another type of eligible retirement account.
Vesting. Retirement benefits in TSERS are fully vested after you complete five years of membership service.
You must be at least age 60 and have at least 25 years of creditable service. You may, however, use your unused sick leave to complete your service requirement of 25 years. Your sick leave cannot, however, be used to make you older.
