The Louisiana Second Injury Fund (LSI) is a tax-exempt trust fund established by the state of Louisiana to provide benefits to injured workers who have suffered a permanent impairment as a result of an on-the-job injury or occupational disease. The fund is funded by employers, who pay a small contribution to the fund for each covered employee. The fund provides compensation to employees suffering from a preexisting impairment that is aggravated or worsened by a subsequent work-related injury or illness. The LSI is divided into two distinct programs: the Permanent Total Disability program and the Permanent Partial Disability program. The Permanent Total Disability program provides benefits to an employee who is unable to return to work due to a permanent disability caused by a work-related injury or illness. The Permanent Partial Disability program provides benefits to an employee who can return to work but has suffered a permanent impairment due to a work-related injury or illness.
