Louisiana Covenant Marriage (not yet married) is a legal agreement between two people intending to marry in the state of Louisiana. It is a more restrictive form of marriage contract that requires premarital counseling, limits legal grounds for divorce, and requires a waiting period for couples to receive a divorce. A couple may choose to enter into a Louisiana Covenant Marriage either before or after receiving a marriage license. There are two types of Louisiana Covenant Marriage for couples who are not yet married. The first type is known as a Declaration of Intent to Marry, which is a written statement of the couple's mutual commitment to enter into a Covenant Marriage. The Declaration of Intent must be signed by both parties in the presence of a notary or other authorized representative. The second type is a Remarriage Covenant, which is a legally binding document that outlines the terms and conditions of the marriage. This document must be signed by both parties in the presence of a notary or other authorized representative, and must include a statement of the couple's intent to enter into a Covenant Marriage. Both types of Covenant Marriage require premarital counseling, and must be filed with the Clerk of Court in the parish where the couple intends to marry.
