Louisiana Covenant Marriage (previously married) is a legally binding arrangement that allows couples to enter into a more serious, committed relationship than a traditional marriage. It is available only to couples who have been previously married, and it provides additional legal safeguards for the couple that are not available in a traditional marriage. Couples must meet certain qualifications, such as attending premarital counseling and having their marriage license signed by two witnesses, in order to enter into a Covenant Marriage. There are two types of Louisiana Covenant Marriage (previously married): Solemn Covenant Marriage and Simple Covenant Marriage. Solemn Covenant Marriage is the stricter of the two agreements, and requires the couple to receive premarital counseling and sign a written document outlining their commitment to each other before marriage. Simple Covenant Marriage does not require premarital counseling or a written agreement, but does set out certain restrictions on grounds for divorce. Both types of Covenant Marriage are difficult to dissolve without the consent of both parties, and require the approval of a court in order to be dissolved.
