An Illinois Order of Protection (Interim or Plenary) is a court order issued by the state of Illinois to protect a person from further abuse, harassment, or stalking. The order can be issued temporarily (interim) or more permanently (plenary). Interim orders can be requested by an individual or by a law enforcement agency and are usually issued for a specific amount of time. Plenary orders are issued by a judge after a hearing, and may include more specific and longer-term protection. These orders may prohibit the abuser from contacting the victim, coming within a certain distance of the victim, entering the victim's residence or workplace, or possessing a weapon. They may also require the abuser to attend counseling or anger management classes, or to attend court hearings.
