FAQ

First-year students at AU are generally required to live on campus, with some exceptions. They have a variety of housing options to choose from, primarily consisting of traditional residence halls and suite-style living arrangements.

We assign students to suites rather than to specific bedrooms. In almost any suite, you should expect to share a bedroom for at least part of the year. Some dorms contain doubles, usually one fairly large room with a shared bath. Very few singles are available.

To cancel your housing, login to AU Housing Portal and complete the cancellation form. You will receive a confirmation email when a cancellation is submitted.

A suite is a grouping of singles and/or doubles that share a common room and may have an internal bathroom or may share an external bathroom with other suites. First-years usually share a bedroom with a roommate. Single rooms are very limited; they may be requested only when there is a medical necessity.

You can apply through the AU Housing Portal. The application allows students to complete their Roommate Matching Questions and review and agree to the Housing License Agreement (HLA). The housing application priority deadline for first-year students is Wednesday, May 7 at PM.

While on-campus housing is guaranteed for first- and second-year undergraduate students, many upper-class AU students, as well as graduate and Washington College of Law students, live off campus in the DC-metropolitan area.

Can I live in a single bedroom as an incoming student? Students seeking a medical accommodation for a single room should reach out to the Academic Support and Access Center. A limited number of single rooms will be made available to the general population incoming students during room selection.

American University Off-Campus Housing Off-campus housing services within Housing & Residence Life provides resources for students looking to live off campus.

Cancellation Process: Prior to taking residence, if your plans change and you are unable to live in university housing, you must login to studenthousing.ucsc and cancel your application/contract. After taking residence, requests for housing contract cancellation must be initiated through studenthousing.ucsc.
