In many cases, a casual employee must be given a minimum shift length of two to four hours depending on the industry. However your minimum shift length depends on the modern award or enterprise agreement that you are covered by.

52.051. PENALIZING EMPLOYEE FOR COMPLIANCE WITH SUBPOENA. (a) An employer may not discharge, discipline, or penalize in any manner an employee because the employee complies with a valid subpoena to appear in a civil, criminal, legislative, or administrative proceeding.

An adult (over 18 years of age) cannot work for more than 48 hours in a week and not more than 9 hours in a day. Further, the spreadover should not exceed 10½ hours. Otherwise, the overtime rules are applicable.

In Texas, there are no laws at the state or federal level limiting the number of hours an employee can work in a day or week.
