The letter is written on parchment paper and delivered to the recipient by owl, except in the case of Muggle-borns and magical children living with Muggles (such as Harry Potter), where the initial acceptance letter is delivered by the regular Muggle post.
Hogwarts first year students are traditionally transported to the castle by boat, accompanied by Hogwarts gamekeeper Hagrid across the Black Lake from Hogsmeade Station at the start of the school year. After this, the new students are sorted into four different houses by the Sorting Hat.
Beside the book, which is bound in peeling black dragon-hide, stands a small silver inkpot and from this protrudes a long, faded quill. These are the Quill of Acceptance and the Book of Admittance and they constitute the only process by which students are selected for Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
For the actual prop, they didn't use a font, as it was handwritten by Miraphora Mina (one of the main graphic designers on all the Harry Potter – and now Fantastic Beasts – films).
