The Paths to Becoming an Officer Attend a senior military college or service academy. Enroll at a traditional college or university with a Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program. Attend Officer Candidate School (OCS) after graduating from college. Receive a direct commission after earning a professional degree.

It depends on the path you choose. If you have at least a four-year college degree, you can earn an officer title upon enlistment; however, there are several other ways to become a U.S. Army officer, including: Senior military college or service academy: Four years or more for the undergraduate degree requirement.

You might consider obtaining a degree in areas such as criminal justice, criminology, forensics and more. Even though it's not currently required to have a college degree, it could made you a more competitive job candidate anyway.

While most Officers possess a college degree, there is no degree requirement to become a Chief Warrant Officer or a Limited Duty Officer.

Enlistees may use their military education benefits to earn a four-year degree, and then apply to officer school. Receive a direct commission after earning a professional degree, such as a medical, law or religious studies degree. Direct commission officers are required to attend officer training.

Does the POE expire? The POE is only valid while a peace officer is actively employed by a law enforcement agency. It will expire once a peace officer becomes eligible for and is issued a Basic Certificate, OR the peace officer separates from employment without a valid Basic Certificate.

Out of thousands that apply each year, only a handful, about four percent of applicants become new hires with the city to attend the Academy for SDPD.
