With 95,437 active members, the State Bar of Texas is one of the largest state bars in the United States. Unlike the American Bar Association (ABA), the State Bar of Texas (SBOT) is a mandatory bar.
Founded in 1877, the Illinois State Bar Association is the premier legal association in the state. As a voluntary organization of more than 30,000 members, the Association's primary focus is to assist Illinois lawyers in the practice of law and to promote improvements in the administration of justice.

Unlike some state bar associations, in which membership is mandatory, ISBA membership is not required of lawyers licensed to practice in Illinois and ISBA membership is completely voluntary.
To become a licensed attorney in Illinois, in addition to passing the bar exam, you also need to pass the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (MPRE) and receive clearance on your Character and Fitness application.
