The Illinois State Bar Association is a voluntary bar association and has no statutory or regulatory role relating to the registration or discipline of attorneys in Illinois.

When it comes to buying and selling property, Illinois is considered an "attorney state." Lawyers participate in the real estate sale process as a matter of custom and practice. But there are no laws or ordinances that require a buyer or seller to use one.

While hiring a real estate attorney is not mandatory for buying or selling a home, it is strongly recommended due to the complexities involved in property transactions.

Lawyers are, of course, directly regulated by the Illinois Supreme Court through the Rules of Professional Conduct and other Court registration and practice rules.

In other states, one organization serves both functions. In every state, however, there is at least one entity that exists to streamline and support the legal profession and to engage with the public to assure confidence in and accountability for attorneys.

The directory maintained by the state bar or its disciplinary board is sometimes called the "Roster of Attorneys" or the "Roll of Attorneys." Six (6) states do not publish a searchable database online. In those jurisdictions, you must call or email the state bar to confirm a lawyer's bar license status or bar number.

State's Attorneys shall be elected at the general election in 1980 and at the general election every 4 years thereafter.

The Attorney Registration & Disciplinary Commission (“ARDC”) issues each attorney a unique, 7-digit ID as part of the admission process. The ARDC number is the attorney's Illinois law license number.
