Rhode Island Custodianship is a legal arrangement whereby a designated adult, known as a custodian, is granted the legal authority to care for a minor child or disabled adult who is unable to care for themselves. The legal authority granted to the custodian allows them to make decisions regarding the child's or disabled adult's financial, educational, medical, and other daily needs. There are two main types of Rhode Island Custodianship: full and limited. Full Custodianship grants the custodian full legal rights over the child or disabled adult, including the right to make legal decisions, access their records, and receive financial support on their behalf. Limited Custodianship is more restricted and grants the custodian limited legal rights, such as the right to access the child's or disabled adult's records and receive financial support on their behalf.
