If you cannot comply with the terms of your housing contract due to significant changes in circumstances beyond your control, you may apply for a contract release by completing the application, located in your My Housing portal, at liveon.msu.
If you are unable to complete the semester, you may choose to withdraw from the University (policy 48-20, 56-30). Students may withdraw at any time during the semester including the last day of classes. Withdrawals are effective the date the form is received by the Registrar's office.
Contact the admissions office and tell them you want to cancel your enrollment. Since you didn't start yet, you can't withdraw, it must be done through admissions. You can also defer your admission if you'd rather start in the spring. Also be sure to contact the housing office to cancel your contract.
Incoming First-Year Students If a student is interested in rooming with a friend, both students must indicate each other as roommate preferences on the HFS Contract using their Penn State Access Account (i.e. abc123).
The HFS Contract is a legally binding contract; once a student has completed the 3-step process to accept the HFS Contract, the HFS Contract cannot be canceled for a student to live off campus. This condition is also acknowledged by the student during the acceptance process.
HOUSING DEPOSIT A student accepting the offer of admission to the University through the MyPennState process will be required to submit a $100 non-refundable housing deposit in addition to University general deposit fees.
Requests are managed completely within the eLiving system. If students agree to a room switch, the eLiving system will automatically update each student's room assignment. Once room assignments are posted in eLiving, the Room Exchange eBoard is available for students to use to manage their room assignment.
Welcome to the Penn State family! First-year students who are accepted to University Park are required to live on campus and guaranteed housing. The Housing and Food Service (HFS) Contract is included in the offer of admission to Penn State, students do not need to make a separate request for housing.
Many colleges have a matching system to pair you with your future roommate. If they do not, they might do it manually within their housing department. If you are going to an in-state college or going to a college with someone you know, you have the opportunity to choose your future roommate if you so wish.
If you are planning on becoming roommates with your best friend in college, this is your time to revisit that decision or be sure you create strong boundaries with your friends to limit any tension or miscommunication. Always remember to think deeply before making any long term decisions like this one.
