West Virginia Low Back Examination is a comprehensive physical examination technique used to evaluate the biomechanical and functional status of the lumbar spine. It includes an evaluation of posture, range of motion, muscle strength and endurance, and neurologic integrity. The examination is typically divided into four components: patient history; inspection of the lumbar spine; palpation; and special tests. The two main types of West Virginia Low Back Examination are manual and instrument-assisted. The manual examination includes passive motion testing, muscle testing, and reflex testing. The instrument-assisted examination includes static and dynamic palpation with a handheld device. Both types of examination are important for the accurate diagnosis and management of low back pain.
