Washington Student Volunteers and Workers' Compensation Coverage is a program created to protect students who volunteer in Washington State from the risks of injury and illness that can occur while volunteering. It provides coverage for medical costs, lost wages, and other expenses related to a work-related injury or illness, as well as death benefits for a student's family in the event of a fatality. The program is administered by the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries (L&I). There are two types of Washington Student Volunteers and Workers' Compensation Coverage: volunteer coverage and student intern coverage. Volunteer coverage covers students who are engaged in volunteer activities for a nonprofit organization, while student intern coverage covers students who are participating in a paid internship program or an unpaid internship program as part of a college or university course. Both types of coverage provide protection for students while they are volunteering, and include medical costs, lost wages, and death benefits.
