A Washington Sexual Assault Protection Order (WAS APO) is a court order that can be issued by a judge in Washington State to protect a victim from further acts of sexual assault or abuse. Wasps can be issued on an emergency, temporary, or permanent basis and can include a variety of protective terms, such as restricting an abuser’s contact with the victim, or prohibiting the abuser from entering the victim’s residence or place of work. There are three types of Wasps: emergency, temporary, and permanent. An emergency WAS APO is issued without notice to the abuser and is effective immediately upon service. A temporary WAS APO is issued after a hearing, and can last up to 14 days. A permanent WAS APO is issued after a hearing as well, and can last up to one year.
