Driver Intrastate

Go to the National Registry website: https://nationalregistry.fmcsa.dot.gov. Logon to your National Registry account. Select CMV Driver Exams from the blue bar at the top of the screen. Select Submit CMV Driver Exam Results

Any driver with an updated certificate can submit it to DPS via email at CDLMedCert@dps.texas.gov or by fax at (512) 424-2002.

If you select either the EA or EI box, you will be able to keep your CDL without submitting a current medical card. If/When you return to driving a commercial vehicle and you need to carry a medical card, you must resubmit a DL-11CD, Self-Certification Form, along with a copy of your valid medical card.

If you perform trade, traffic, or transportation exclusively in your business's domicile state, this is considered intrastate commerce.

You are engaging in Interstate commerce by transporting goods across state lines. Intrastate trucking means that you drive your commercial motor vehicle only within a state's boundaries and that you do not fit any of the other descriptions of interstate commerce.

Non-Excepted Interstate (NI) You operate or expect to operate a CMV in interstate commerce and you meet the qualification requirements under Title 49, CFR, part 391. The license does not restrict the transport, origination, or destination of the load to be transported.

Non-Excepted Interstate (NI)Interstate commerce means trade, traffic, or transportation in the United States (U.S.) that is: Between a place in a state and a place outside of that state (including a place outside of the U.S.).

2022 Drivers who operate in intrastate commerce but engage exclusively in transportation or operations that are not required to meet all or parts of the state driver qualification requirements. 2022 Examples of excepted Intrastate Drivers include city, municipal, or state employees commercial driver's license holders.

In order to keep your CDL, some states will allow a CDL holder to certify in a category that does not require a medical certificate e.g. Intrastate Excepted, if they are not currently driving.This will give you a way to maintain your CDL without a current medical card.
