South Carolina Motion for Service by Publication is a legal process by which a party in a legal action is served with notice of the action via public means such as a newspaper, radio or television. The motion is used when the party to be served cannot be located through other means, such as personal service. There are two main types of South Carolina Motion for Service by Publication: general publication and targeted publication. General publication is available when a party to be served cannot be identified or located, and it requires publication of the notice in a newspaper of general circulation in the county where the action is pending. Targeted publication is available when the party to be served can be identified or located, but service cannot be effectuated; it requires publication of the notice in a newspaper located in the county where the party to be served resides.
