The document can then be used as evidence in court that the document was successfully served. There are three types of Pennsylvania Proof of Service: personal service, substituted service, and constructive service. Personal service (also known as direct service) is when a process server hands a legal document directly to the person or party to be served. Substituted service is when a process server delivers the document to someone of suitable age and discretion at the person or party’s residence or place of business. Constructive service is when a process server posts the document in a publicly accessible place or sends the document via certified mail.
