New Jersey Certification in Support of Establish Paternity, also known as NJ CSP, is a document used in the state of New Jersey to legally establish the paternity of a child. This document is required when a child is born to unmarried parents, or when there is a dispute over the parentage of a child. The document states that the father has acknowledged paternity of the child and is willing to accept legal responsibility for the child. There are two types of NJ CSP: the Voluntary Acknowledgement of Paternity (VAP) and the Court Order Acknowledgement of Paternity (COAL). The VAP is signed by both parents and witnessed in front of two people or an authorized representative. This document establishes paternity without the need for a court order. The COAL must be issued by a court and establishes paternity after a court hearing.
