If you are to have a procedure done with contrast, an intravenous (IV) line will be started in the hand or arm for injection of the contrast media. For oral contrast, you will be given a liquid contrast preparation to swallow. In some situations, the contrast may be given rectally.
Don't eat for four hours before your CT scan. Drink only clear liquids (like water, juice or tea) in the two hours leading up to your appointment. Wear comfortable clothes and remove any metal jewelry or clothing. Your provider may give you a hospital gown to wear.
If you are receiving CT scan IV contrast, do not eat or drink 4 hours prior your exam. You may continue to drink water if you prefer. Continue to take all of your prescribed medications. Please do not bring children under age 12 to your appointment.
