Having felony convictions will automatically disqualify you from obtaining a permit in New York. Offenses and violations outlined in 265 of the NYS penal law will automatically disqualify you from receiving a NYS pistol permit. This includes, but is not limited to: Stalking in the third or fourth degree.
Now with that being said in NY state obtaining a pistol permit is not a small hurdle. It's generally not a difficult process for most people it's just long. I would start the handgun process immediately as there is a lot of wait time built into that process.

How long does the process take to obtain a pistol license? You should expect it to take a minimum of six (6) to seven (7) months from the time of application until a license is either granted or denied.
