FAQ

If you are currently living in a residence hall and wish to move to either another hall or another room, see your Residential Education Director. Once your request has been received, we will look on our waiting list to determine if other assignment changes are ahead of you and to determine space availability.

Freshmen are not guaranteed housing, and yes, juniors and seniors who have been living on campus have higher priority than you.

Yes, 100% of rising second-year students will live in a designated second-year residence hall for the 2025-2026 academic school year.

The University of Washington does not require students to live on campus. Although students are not required, about 71% of freshmen choose to live on campus. Housing is not guaranteed but placement in the residence halls is guaranteed for returning residents.

If you want to request a specific roommate on your housing application, you will need their UW student ID number. We cannot guarantee requested roommates will be assigned together. Students who request and are approved for a gender-inclusive room will be assigned with another student who has requested the same.

Whether your student loves to socialize or craves quiet time, the UW has a place to meet their needs. It's not required, but 71% of UW freshmen choose to live on campus because of the convenience and community. And speaking of convenience, hungry Huskies will find no shortage of on-campus food choices.

UW students have three main types of housing to choose from: on-campus housing, off-campus housing and homestay.

Step 4: Update your application You may update your application to change residence hall preferences and roommate preferences by returning to the housing portal. This will not affect your original completed contract and application date.

What do I include in a Roommate Agreement? Information about the property, roommates, and original lease. Term or length of the agreement. Rent responsibilities. Security deposit details. Responsibilities for utilities and household costs. House rules, roommate duties, and restrictions. Rules for termination of tenancy.

To write a simple contract, title it clearly, identify all parties and specify terms (services or payments). Include an offer, acceptance, consideration, and intent. Add a signature and date for enforceability. Written contracts reduce disputes and offer better legal security than verbal ones.
