If the seller lost the title, and you really want to buy the car, tell them to go to the DMV and get a replacement title. Once they have it, and ONLY once they have it (in hand, ready to sign over to you), you can buy the vehicle. If the seller IS able to get the title, make sure there are no lienholders listed.
