If you discover an error on a previously filed Form 941 or need to amend a Form 941, you would correct using Form 941-X, Adjusted Employer's Quarterly Federal Tax Return or Claim for Refund. This is filed separately from Form 941.
Owners who are age 65 or older, are disabled or are a disabled veteran qualify to receive additional exemptions.

Fix the error Close the 941 form and open a Payroll Summary report. Note any payroll items in the Additions or Deductions sections on the report. Select Lists, then Payroll Item List. Fix the payroll item(s) by selecting the correct tax tracking type. Run a Payroll Check-up to correct your wage amounts.

Filling Out Form 941-X Complete the required fields, including your EIN, the quarter you are filing for, company name, and year. Gather your 941, payroll log, and a blank 941-X for every quarter you are filing for. For each quarter, select the appropriate calendar year and the date for the portion you are amending.
For overpayments: Employers correcting an overpayment must use the corresponding "X" form. Employers can choose to either make an adjustment or claim a refund on the form.
Probably the biggest reason is these two reports do not pull from the same tables, easy enough. The 941, how I like to say it calculates on the fly, just like your W-2 does. Where as your Payroll Summary pulls from the UPR30100 Check history table and that is populated at the time the payroll was processed.
Annual amounts from payroll records should match the total amounts reported on all Forms 941 for the year. Total amounts reported on all Forms 941 for the year should match the sum of the same data fields shown in W-2/W-3 totals. If these amounts do not match, recheck records and identify necessary adjustments.
