The homestead credit is a property tax credit for residents of the state of Iowa who own and occupy their homestead on July 1 and for at least six months of the calendar year. Homestead Tax Credit Formula For claimants with household income of $8,000 or less, the credit is equal to 80% of property taxes or rent constituting property taxes to a maximum of $1,450 in property taxes or rent. The maximum credit is $1,160 (80% of $1,450 ).

(c) "Homestead" means a dwelling or a unit in a multiple-unit dwelling, owned and occupied as a home by the owner thereof, including all contiguous unoccupied real property owned by the person. Homestead includes a dwelling and an outbuilding used in connection with a dwelling, situated on the lands of another.
