You will automatically receive Homestead Exemption for the current tax year. This is your receipt. If you are no longer entitled to Homestead Exemption you must sign the Exemption removal request on the reverse side of this document and return it to the Property Appraiser.
Other reasons you may either lose your exemption and/or be back charged: If you were receiving a widow's or widower's exemption and you remarry. If the homesteader of record dies and the property continues to claim the exemption in future years in the name of the deceased owner.
After your initial application for the Homestead Exemption has been made and the exemption has been granted, a receipt will be mailed to you each year in early January to verify that the status, use and ownership has not changed.

In order to rescind the homestead exemption status in its entirety, all exemption applicants must agree to do so by completing and signing this form. Submit the completed form in person, by US Mail, via email to: exemptions@leepa, or fax it to: 239-533-6038.
Homestead Exemption does not transfer from property to property. If you had this exemption last year on another property and moved, you must file a new application for your new residence. Notify the Property Appraiser to cancel the exemptions on your former home.
Please Note: We are currently accepting E-file applications for the tax year 2025 only. To be eligible for homestead exemption, you must be a permanent resident of Florida, who owns real property as of January 1 of the year in which you are applying.
You must file the Transfer of Homestead Assessment Difference Form DR-501T with the homestead application Form DR-501 for your new home. The due date to file these forms with your county property appraiser's office is March 1 of the first year after you have moved.
How long do exemptions continue? Your exemptions may be automatically renewed each year, in January, as long as title does not change on the property and your residency status remains the same. Please note: Florida Law requires filing a new application when any title change or change in the recorded deed is made.
