You have 30 days after the form or special interrogatories were served to you (35 days if served by mail from within California) to serve your responses to the interrogatories. Sometimes, rather than answering the interrogatory, you may wish to object to the request on legal grounds.

A photocopy of your form interrogatories must be served on the attorney for the responding party or directly to the responding party if he or she is self-represented (in pro per). Courtesy copies should be served on all other attorneys or self-represented parties in the case.

Interrogatories are lists of questions sent to the other party that s/he must respond to in writing. You can use interrogatories to find out facts about a case but they cannot be used for questions that draw a legal conclusion.

Questions must be clear, concise and precise, since even the slightest ambiguity invites either an objection that an interrogatory is hopelessly vague and incapable of being answered, or an answer which, although arguably respon- sive, is essentially meaningless.

Your answers to the interrogatories should usually be short, clear, and direct and should answer only the question that is being asked. This is not the time to set out your entire case or defense to the other side. Take the time to make sure your answers are correct and truthful.
